We had a really nice time at Vai beach.. theres some choice of water sports, like jet ski (40e for 15min)

Located in the easternmost part of Crete this beach and the taverna is practically in the middle of nowhere. The beach itself is very beautiful-but no more than the other beaches of the area. The really unique there is the one and only palm-tree forest existing in Europe where the endemic palm-tree Phoenix theofrastii grows. Very beautiful landscape, a really MUST see if you are into admiring biodiversity and want to have fun in the beach. Can be extremely crowded in July-August. Bring your own sun-umbrella if don’t want to pay for renting it. Tip: check the beach which is just beside the Vai beach and can be reached other by a 15min swim or walking through a small path starting at the east part of Vai. It’s nicer and really less crowded!

One of the amazing beaches of Crete, where you can find the forest of palms famous “Finicodasos”, built by the Romans who were parked in the area was used as a basis for departure to Egypt, south from Zakros (now submerged in the sea), and north from Itanos, which was also a fortress whose remains impressive, there are up to the day.

Region favored by backpackers, especially for 5000 palm trees, sandy beach (gravel) and straw huts. The coast has a number of rocks in the sea, two had the distinct shape of a turtle and a lizard.

Beach cafe, restaurant and two kiosks, and services are arranged and a parking lot, and for Accommodation Accommodation must be removed to the south, near the town Palekastro, or west of the Sitia City (or Seitia), a nice and quiet. There are other sites and places of interest and even archeology enthusiasts nature lovers, and especially natural days, and many isolated bays for those who seek it

Whilst in Crete earlier this month, my wife suggested we should go to Vai beach on the north eastern coast – once made famous by a chocolate commercial in the early 1970s.
It was not difficult to find and I must admit I was looking forward to going there not only for its natural beauty but also for the clear sea; the beach is somewhat secluded and until you turn the last corner you do not get to see the palms that give this area its main attraction.

As a tourist the last thing I expected to see is a small cabin with a sign listing entrance fees. For an ordinary car the charge was 2.5 Euros. An usher summoned us to park in an open field that despite the admission fee is not tarmacked.
Once at the beach I was surprised it was not sandy but composed mainly of fine shingle; with the strong heat the temperature was baking so one would urge the use of footwear to prevent injury. I was further disappointed to find a series of rocks along the water edge making waking into the sea rather difficult.

No sooner that you select your beach loungers with fixed palm umbrellas an official calls asking for the hire which came to around 5 Euros per lounger – this compared with 6 Euros for a pair of loungers and umbrella in other seaside locations.

Overall I was not that well impressed and I will certainly not consider going there again
If you are in Crete try the west coast where two lovely beaches lie in wait.

The beach was great and the sea was really nice and clear. Spent over 2 hours snorkeling and was surprised by the amount of fish & species I saw. Another thing is how beatufil was the palm trees, it’s not an everyday thing being surrounded by palm trees on a beach in Europe so you have to appreciate that.

It was one of our best days spent in crete. It’s something normal that the sand/gravel gets too hot by the sun and that you’ll find some rocks while getting into the beach but PLEASE STOP MOANING about it all you have to do is spend 6 Euro on a swim shoes & off you go and appreciate the beauty of the sea & nature!!
    A memorable day :) )

  6. Henry says:

Hire a sunbed and straw umbrella then take to the water with a snorkel. Jet skis and windsurfing equipment are available for rent, while Vai Scuba Diving Club offers scuba trips.
After the beach, visit Toplou Monastery, a 15th-century fortified retreat, housing a fine collection of Byzantine icons. The largest landowner in the region, Toplou counts Vai Beach among its properties.

  7. Crete223 says:

Palm Beach Vai: For the exotic Caribbean vibe – this is where Mars’s “taste of paradise” Bounty bar advert was filmed in the early 1970s. Also known as Finikodassos (Palm Beach), this gently curving golden sand beach is backed by Europe’s largest natural palm grove – some 5000 towering trees in an oasis fed by a stream – which have stood here for over 2000 years. According to legend, the palms grew from date stones discarded by Saracen pirates and washed up by the sea.
