Terra Minoika Villas, Kato Zakros

Categories: Villas, Zakros-Xerokambos - Reviews: 3 Reviews »

The valley, overgrown with olive-trees, vineyards and gardens

The ramshackled carcass of the Minoan Palace

The entrance to the Dead’s Gorge, carved in perpendicular slopes as if by Titans, within numerable caves and wild goats around

The plain, pure white, orthodox St Antonios’ chapel

The fishing boats and the seagulls, proud ornaments of a gulf belonging to a sea that stretches as far as the eye can see

The beach with the picturesque fish-taverns and its “Blue Flag”, awarded for its crystal-clear waters.

The mountains, full of wild natural beauty, scenting the unique fragrances of the herbs ofthe Cretan soil

The cloudless sky, which on the mainland is interrupted only by the mountain crests that crown the valley, and in the horizon meets the sea in an eternal erotic embrace

A composition of colours, sounds and fragrances, a conjectural crescendo that the creator conceived through divine inspiration but also a composition carefully decorated by a tactful human presence

Images that hardly quench the senses, but one can rejoice them either by simply gazingthrough the windows which adorn every apartment like beautiful paintings or by comfortably seated at the terraces and the countless spots of Terra Minoika (Minoan Land) dedicated toreverie.

A stone creation

A hymn to the traditional Greek architecture, built totally by native stone, closely tied to the environment

A surprise, even to the experts, due not only to its unique construction but also due to the architectural inspirations of its creators as well

No one could ever imagine that almost 3,000 square meters (sq.m.) of native, granite hardferrous-stone would be responsible for an environment so delicate to the senses!

They dominate the entrance to the village of Kato Zakros, at an altitude of 40 m. above the sea surface, with a panoramic, unhindered view to the bay and to all the sights of the area.

After a few trips to western Crete, we wanted to experience eastern Crete. We knew the ideal place for us would be more traditional but comfortable, in a quiet area, at the seaside, and near a number of hiking trails. Stella’s Terra Minoika villas fit that bill exactly. The villas are constructed in a traditional design, and as others have pointed out, are furnished and finished with a great deal of care for the needs and wants of the guest. They are stunning inside and out.

Full housekeeping service is provided twice per week with additional minor maintenance every day or so. All villas have sea views (of the Blue Flag pebble beach) from their own terrace and a panoramic view of the valley, including the Minoan palace and the Gorge of the Dead. The two superior villas have a few more features (including an additional porch) and more privacy but all villas provide a peaceful ambience. Stella and Ilias have created something really special here and we highly recommend this as a destination for those enjoying nature, archeology, peaceful beaches and the quiet spirit of Crete’s smaller towns and villages.

Stella opened the traditional villas last year in Kato Zakros. Built in traditional cretan style by the owners the villas are beautiful and very comfortable. Five villas are availabe, two of which are ‘superior’. All have fantastic views of the Kato Zakros bay and the Gorge of the Dead. Nearer to the beach than the apartments and studios they are well located for the tavernas of Kato Zakros where lovely cretan food can be enjoyed. Stella works very hard to welcome all her guests, with lovely touches such as a welcome pack of jam, wine, cheese, honey, fresh greek coffee, raki, bread etc. The villas are extremely well kitted out and are very comfortable. The only suggestion I would make is that the addition of sunbeds for each villa would add to the facilities offered. There is nothing better than waking up to the wonderful view of the mountains surrounding Kato Zakros and then sitting on the verander to enjoy fresh bread and honey whilst marvelling the beautiful view of the sea. Here you will find total relaxation and peace and quiet. Dont come here if you are looking for nightlife, tourist shops, kids clubs and a pool…..leave it for the rest of us to enjoy the unique peace and quiet! Stella provides excellent information and maps for hiking in the local area and hiking routes are well marked. There is a small gym facility on site. Free parking. I have no hesitation recommending Stella’s accommodation.

We stayed in one of the new Terra Minoika apartments just off the road down into Kato Zakros so this review relates to these and not the other apartments they have. These villas/apartments are constructed to a very standard using local stone and wood but in a modern way and with many nice decorative touches. Possibly the most beautiful buildings we have ever stayed in, the attention to detail is astonishing. The views over the sea, down to the Minoan palace and to the gorge entrance are spectacular. A few minutes walk down to the beach and tavernas. Stella will help with walk information and even a lift at the end. They are not particularly cheap but the same standard in central Agios Nikolaos or Rethymnon would be twice the price. Will revisit as soon as we can.
