1 km East from Palekastro you can find Agathias, a small and traditional village.

Taverna – Restaurant Vaios is situated in Agathias, approximately 1000 m. from the famous beaches of Hiona and Kouremenos, and is one of the few traditional taverns that still have every day changing Cretan specialties.

If you stay, or are in the neighborhood of Palekastro, don’t miss this tavern.
When you enter the tavern, Vaios, the owner, will immediately invite you in the kitchen to see which dishes you can enjoy apart from the menu.

They always have a good glass of local wine and at the end of your dinner it is hard to refuse the offered home made raki.

Vaios and Koula opened their first restaurant at Palekastro in 1980. In 1989 they moved in Agathias. Since then, the name “Vaios” is famous among European visitors of the area, who they become firm frequenters of the restaurant during their vacation, knowing very well that they will not be disappointed by the superlative flavour fo the Cretan cuisine of Vaios and Koula.
Vaios is the “master” of barbecue. Meat and fish get a special savour under his “attention”. His plat du jour is “bekri meze”.

Koula undertakes the prepartion and the cooking of every homemade meal. Her mousakas, pastitsio, gemista, giouvetsi, as well as her pies are unique.

Beyond all these, what distinguishes this restaurant and attracts permanent customers through the years is the genuine and friendly character of its owners. Nobody leaves this restaurant without having felt the warm, true and gentle ambience. There you can loose yourself and feel this sincere cretan hospitality and authenticity.

    Wir haben gerade wieder in Palekastro Urlaub gemacht und
    zu den Höhepunkten des Urlaubs gehören immer die Abendessen bei ‘VAIOS’. Stefania, die Tochter von Vaios und Koula, und ihr Mann Giannis haben jetzt das Restaurant übernommen. Nach wie vor gibt es dort beste traditionelle griechische Küche und auch fantasievolle neue Kreationen mit vorwiegend einheimischen Produkten.
    Der Gang in die Küche mit Blick in die Töpfe ist obligatorisch,
    ebenso der Nachtisch samt Raki auf Kosten des Hauses.
    Wir können Vaios Restaurant nur empfehlen!

    Schon seit vielen Jahren machen wir auf Ostkreta Urlaub und haben in vielen Tavernen gegessen. Unser Lieblingslokal jedoch ist die Taverne Vaios. Hier findet man eine familiäre Atmosphäre in einem ruhigen, typisch kretischen Dorf. Bei Vaios kann man noch in die Töpfe schauen! Jeden Tag wird hier frisch gekocht und auch die gegrillten Speisen sind perfekt. Mein Tipp: Saganaki (braun), Lammrippchen, Stifado, handgeschnitzte Pommes…. – und alles mit eigenem Olivenöl zubereitet.
    Es schmeckt alles lecker. Noch zu erwähnen: keine Fertiggerichte!

    Very good restaurant with very good service from Vaios and his family and stunning food! We ate here twice. Food was just great, we loved drinking raki and eating the daily menus!

    We visited Vaios during our week holiday in Palekastro having heard and seen fab reviews, we were very lucky to get one of the last tables outside overlooking the village, beautiful setting. The owner Vaios and his wife Koula looked after us so well, so attentive but not intrusive. The restaurant was very busy and we were glad we had timed it right. The food was simply delicious and it was the best evening we had the whole week, so much so, we went again on our last night but sadly hadn’t booked and the restaurant was fully booked all evening :( we would love to come back one day and we know that we would be welcomed with open arms and a warm smile :)

    In Griechenland gibt es immer weniger ursprüngliche Tavernen, in denen nicht nur für die Touristen gekocht wird.

    Vaios Taverne ist solch ein Kleinod. Hier gibt es keine Karte, sondern man schaut noch in der Küche in die Töpfe und wählt eines der leckeren hausgemachten und am Tage frisch gekochten griechischen Leckereien aus. Gegrilltes gibt es natürlich auch immer, wenn man mal Lust darauf hat. Dazu einen guten Hauswein und absolut faire Preise.

    Was will man mehr?

    Nun, ein extra bietet die Taverne schon noch. Nämlich den urigen und authentischen Gastwirt Vaios selbst, der das Kochzepter zwar inzwischen an seine Tochter und deren Mann abgegeben hat, aber noch immer als unterhaltender Gastgeber fungiert.

    Er begrüßt jeden Gast herzlich und setzt sich auch mal dazu und unterhält sich.
    Nach dem Essen gibt es zur (Gratis)-Nachspeise auch noch kostenlos Raki ausgeschenkt.
    Vaios zelebriert dies mit seiner uralten Plastikkanne, geht von Tisch zu Tisch und schenkt das ein oder andere Mal nach, natürlich nicht ohne es sich nehmen zu lassen mit einigen Tischen auch mal anzustoßen.

    Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt, das Essen war vorzüglich und ehrlich ohne “Touri-Schnick-Schnack” und kommen sicherlich wieder. Hier läßt es sich leben!

    Die Familie vermietet auch Studios. Siehe auch meine Bewertung unter Elia Studios. Die Studios sind auch absolut zu empfehlen. Sauber und mit Küche ausgestattet.
