    1. The Elysee Hotel location – right on the seafront, with stunning view. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Recommend..

    4. I would like to put in a word for Sitia. Although it’s not convenient for visiting Hrissi island, it’s a really nice little city, with some wonderful beaches not all that far away. If you don’t mind a fairly long journey from Heraklion airport, you could investigate Palaikastro, and further down the coast, Xerocampos.

The east of Crete is now the least developed part of the island, largely due to the lack of an airport. One is planned, but meanwhile there are still lovely, quiet places to stay.

I’m not sure Hrissi is worth the journey. Others may disagree (and I haven’t been there so if they do I won’t argue) but from what I’ve heard, it’s just a beach, and a much-visited one at that.

Spend as much time on Crete as you can.

    5. We stayed in Sitia last year and will be returning. We liked it as a base to explore this relatively quiet end of the Island. Vai is over hyped and far too busy but we found other lovely beaches which we had almost to ourselves.

    6. Sitia is a lovely town. Vai is a major tourist destination on account of the palm trees: overcrowded and disappointing in my opinion. There are much better beaches in the area, and in the far south east, at and near Xerocampos. Given your interest in nature, this would be a good area for you to stay in: it’s as yet unspoiled (apart from Vai, which has been spoiled for about the last 25 years). It’s not as spectacular as the west, but it’s very very nice. The Zakros gorge is beautiful, and the archaeological site itself very interesting.

    7. I stayed one night at the Elysee in Sitia last month as I was touring that part of the island. I paid 35e for single occupancy which I thought was quite reasonable for a 3 star. Its right on the seafront with lovely views over the harbour.
The service was very good, the hotel was clean and the breakfast was very plentiful. They also have a car-park at the rear which is very handy as the parking in Sitia is not the best. I’d definitely recommend it.
