Traditional Villages in Eastern Crete :

Sitia :: Palekastro :: Ierapetra

Kalo Horio

This village belongs to the Ziros community (municipality of Lefki) and, since it is not mentioned by the Venetians in the 1583 census, it was probably founded after the 16th century. At the time of the 1881 census the population was 136 and had increased to 155 by 1928.

It is 36 km from Sitia

Approaching Kalo Horio, the first building we meet is the church of the village.
Marvelous view to Libyan Sea from the village.
The settlement is a small one nowadays. Its population is not more than 10 inhabitants.

Narrow streets are among the littles houses.
We visited the village in December 2003 when the bad weather had passed and had left some snow, something very rare in eastern Crete.

The snow gave a special beauty to the already wonderful landscape.
