About 10 kms far from Ziros plateau the small village Chametoulo is located. The road to Xerokambos is just a few metres out the village, so it's not difficult to have a stop there and have a sight to the almost abandoned settlement.
The first building you meet when you start walking in the village is the church and then you start seeing the houses (almost 50). They are tidy and built close to one another with narrow roads among them.
The inhabitants have small flocks of sheep and goats and some land, which they try to cultivate though the area is tough and rocky. The hills are rocky and the sight impresses the visitor, leading him to another older time.
From there goes on the new asphalt road, which leads to the touristic developed Xerokambos after descending making constant zigzag. The view to the Libyan Sea is marvelous and surely you will stop to make some photos. Possibly this area is the most authentic of eastern Crete.
