Expanding on the initial overview, the archaeological site of Knossos is a complex palatial city…
Agiofarago Gorge
Agiofarago is more than just a beach; it is an experience that begins the moment your car leaves the asphalt and starts dancing on the dirt roads of the Asterousia Mountains. Located about 80 km south of Heraklion, it stands as one of the most spiritual and rugged landscapes in Crete.
Here is a guide to the Gorge of Saints, based on travel experiences and the latest trends from social media.
The Route: Walking Through History
Access starts near the Odigitria Monastery, where the road turns into a dirt track. After about 4–6 km (depending on where you choose to park), you reach the entrance of the gorge.
The Hike: The path through the gorge is easy, flat, and takes approximately 20–30 minutes. it is ideal even for families with children.
The Hermitages: The name Agiofarago translates to Gorge of Saints, named after the hermits who lived here in total isolation. Along the way, you will see the impressive Goumenospilios, a cave where the ascetics gathered once a year, and the Church of St. Anthony (14th century) with its well providing brackish water.
The Lords of the Gorge: Don’t be surprised if you see dozens of wild goats climbing the vertical cliffs with incredible ease. They are the permanent residents, and if you have food with you, they will definitely try to become your friends!
The Beach: Where the Gorge Meets the Libyan Sea
At the exit of the gorge, one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Crete awaits you.
The Setting: Fine pebbles, crystal-clear, deep, and cool waters.
The Arch: On the western side of the beach, an impressive natural stone arch forms in the sea. It is the ultimate Instagram spot and offers a unique swimming experience as you glide underneath it.
Important Note: The beach is completely unorganized. You must bring your own water, umbrella, and supplies. Also, due to the sacred nature of the area, nudism is discouraged.
Wild Rocks and Rock Climbing
For adventure seekers, Agiofarago is a world-class climbing destination. The vertical limestone cliffs rising hundreds of meters offer dozens of routes (ranging from 5a to 8c). The feeling of climbing with a view of the endless blue of the Libyan Sea is second to none.
Trails Beyond the Beach
If relaxing on the sand isn’t enough for you, there are two routes that will take your breath away:
1. Vourvoulitis (The Hidden Lake):By climbing the rocks on the eastern side of the beach (requires caution and closed-toe shoes), you will find a geological marvel: a circular sea-lake/sinkhole. It communicates underwater with the open sea, and its water is a deep turquoise.
Tip: The view from above is the most viral angle of the area.
2. Trails to Vathi & Kali Limenes: There are paths that run parallel to the coastline.
To the east, the trail leads to Kali Limenes (approx. 1–1.5 hours), offering panoramic views of the Libyan Sea.
To the west, more experienced hikers can reach Martsalo Gorge or the secluded beach of Vathi, though the route is more demanding due to the heat and rocky terrain.
Extra Tips:
Weather: If strong north winds are blowing, Agiofarago is your sanctuary, as the high cliffs protect the beach perfectly.
Timing: Bloggers suggest arriving early in the morning (before 10:00 AM) to catch the natural shade from the cliffs, which disappears by midday.
Protection: Remember that the area is part of the Odigitria Monastery estate and a Natura protected zone. Respect the silence and always take your trash back with you
